The 2nd Transapical TEER Ultrasound Hands-on Training Camp (Shandong Session) Successfully Held!

Recently, the "Transapical TEER Ultrasound Surgery Practical Training Camp (Shandong Station)" was successfully held in Binzhou, Shandong Province, jointly organized by Hanyu Medical and the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of the Affiliated Hospital of Binzhou Medical College. As the second stop in the "Yujunwei Valve Apical Introductory" series of events, this training camp focused on the intraoperative ultrasound guidance of domestically produced transapical TEER technology. Attracting over 40 structural heart disease interventional and ultrasound experts and young surgeons from nine medical centers across the province, the training camp further promoted the standardized and systematic training of TEER procedures.

This training was hosted by Professor Dong Shengjun of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Affiliated Hospital of Binzhou Medical College. Professor Li Wei of the Department of Cardiac Ultrasound Diagnosis at Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University and Professor Wang Zhengjun, Director of the Cardiovascular Surgery Center at Shandong Provincial Hospital, served as lecturers.

Host: Professor Dong Shengjun

Head of Cardiovascular Surgery, Affiliated Hospital of Binzhou Medical College, Professor, Chief Physician, and Master's Supervisor.

He routinely performs surgical treatments for congenital heart disease, valvular heart disease, coronary heart disease, and major vascular disease. His main areas of expertise are coronary heart surgery, major vascular surgery, and valvular heart surgery.

Vice Chairman of the Shandong Medical Association's Macrovascular Disease Committee, Vice Chairman of the Binzhou Medical Association's Cardiovascular Surgery Branch, Vice Chairman of the Binzhou Medical Association's Cardiovascular Surgery Branch, Vice Chairman of the Yellow River Delta Macrovascular Specialty Alliance, Member of the Shandong Medical Association's Cardiovascular Surgery Branch, and Member of the Shandong Medical Association's Cardiovascular Surgery Branch.

Multidisciplinary Lectures: Analyzing the Complete Process from Preoperative Evaluation to Intraoperative Practice

This training camp utilizes a combination of "theoretical lectures + simulated practical exercises" to comprehensively cover the core aspects of transapical TEER procedures, including preoperative evaluation, intraoperative ultrasound guidance, and clipping effectiveness assessment. During the morning's theoretical training session, leading experts in ultrasound and cardiac surgery jointly delivered lectures.

Speaker  Professor Li Wei

Professor of the Department of Cardiac Ultrasound Diagnosis, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, and the National Medical Center for Structural Cardiac Interventional Echocardiography Team. Member of the Ultrasound Expert Committee of the National Structural Heart Disease Quality Control Center, Gold Member of the Asia-Pacific Structural Heart Disease Youth Club, and instructor of interventional ultrasound imaging. Specializing in ultrasound imaging and intraoperative guidance for interventional treatments for structural heart disease, including LAAC, TAVR, TEER, TMVR, and TTVr. He participated in the writing of the "Chinese Expert Consensus on Echocardiographic Evaluation of Interventional Treatment for Mitral Regurgitation," "Chinese Expert Consensus on Echocardiographic Evaluation of Interventional Treatment for Tricuspid Regurgitation," and "Clinical Pathway for Transcatheter Mitral Valve Edge-to-Edge Repair in China."

Speaker  Professor Wang Zhengjun

Director of the Cardiovascular Surgery Center of Shandong Provincial Hospital, Chief Physician, Doctor of Medicine, Doctoral Supervisor, and one of the Top Ten Young Physicians of Shandong Provincial Hospital. Visiting Scholar at Mayo Clinic, USA. Chairman of the Cardiovascular Surgery Branch of the Shandong Rehabilitation Medicine Association and Vice Chairman of the Cardiovascular Surgery Branch of the Shandong Medical Association. He is mainly engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac and vascular surgical diseases. He is good at minimally invasive treatment of valvular heart disease, surgical treatment of coronary heart disease and large vessel disease. He has accumulated rich clinical experience in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), transcatheter mitral regurgitation (plasty and valve replacement), coronary artery bypass grafting and minimally invasive occlusion treatment of congenital heart disease.

Theoretical course content covers:

  • Preoperative imaging assessment and path planning

  • Intraoperative TEE standard view acquisition techniques

  • Key points of intraoperative real-time ultrasound monitoring

  • Real-time assessment of clipping effectiveness

  • Mitral valve anatomical classification

Professor Li Wei helps students build a comprehensive and systematic "intraoperative ultrasound thinking system" through analysis of typical cases and analysis of key technical points. Professor Wang Zhengjun, drawing on a recent transapical TEER procedure, provided a vivid and intuitive explanation of the key considerations surgeons need to take into account during this procedure, providing practical experience in clinical thinking and risk assessment.

Real-life simulation strengthens surgeons' closed-loop skills

The afternoon session focused on simulation-based practical training. Using real equipment and simulated case environments, participants will receive hands-on instruction, covering the following:

  • Obtaining and controlling standard TEE views

  • Imaging guidance for apical puncture and clip placement

  • Complication identification and management strategies

  • Dynamic assessment of residual regurgitation and clip effectiveness

The training camp provides an immersive experience in collaborative practice between ultrasound specialists and surgeons, providing a solid imaging foundation for intraoperative decision-making.

Graduation and Empowerment: Towards a New Generation of "Valve Imaging Professionals"

Finally, at the graduation ceremony, the organizers presented completion certificates to all participants, marking their official entry into a new stage of professional development as "new generation valve imaging professionals."

Collaboration between top and bottom hospitals creates a new teaching paradigm within the province

This training camp brought together 26 surgical and ultrasound experts, and 8 anesthesia and surgical support staff, from nine core centers across Shandong Province. This laid a solid foundation for establishing a multidisciplinary, cross-team collaborative model.

This event was the first in the province to leverage a university platform and integrate surgical and ultrasound experts to establish a collaborative training model between hospitals at all levels. This model enhanced the collaborative training capabilities of multiple hospitals in the field of valvular intervention and served as a model for promoting tiered diagnosis and treatment, establishing clinical concepts, and enhancing the cardiac interventional surgery capabilities of secondary-level hospitals.

The Path to Precision Clipping: Ultrasound Leads the Way

With the continuous maturation of minimally invasive treatment technologies for structural heart disease, transapical mitral valve edge-to-edge repair (TA-TEER), with its advantages of a short path length and flexible device control, has gradually become an important treatment option for elderly, high-risk, and complex patients. Ultrasound is the "critical eye" throughout the entire diagnosis and treatment process, determining the accuracy of the procedure.

Going forward, Hanyu Medical will continue to collaborate with clinical centers nationwide to further develop the "Yujunwei Valve" series of academic platforms, supporting the standardization of independent valve technology practices in China and the development of surgeons, jointly ushering in the "Era of Precision" for valvular intervention.

Special thanks to the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Affiliated Hospital of Binzhou Medical College for their generous support of this event!
